Burnt Umbers

Umbers are naturally occurring Iron Oxides that are highly valued for their transparency and neutral chromaticity. In their natural “crude or raw” form, their chemistry is similar to Yellow Iron Oxide. Like Yellow Iron Oxides, Burnt Umbers have limited heat stability at temperatures greater than 315ºC/600ºF. At higher temperatures, Umbers convert to a Red Iron Oxide, Fe2O3 chemical form just like a Yellow Iron Oxide. This heating conversion is normally referred to as burning, hence the term Burnt Umber.

Concrete Gray

Using HOOVER COLOR pigments to color concrete products is relatively simple. It is recommended that color pigment be added by weight rather than volume. Typical pigment loadings range from ½ to 5 lbs. per 94 lb. bag of cement. Pigment loadings should not exceed 10% of cement content. To ensure maximum color performance, pigments should always be dry blended with cement, sand and aggregate before the addition of water.

Pigments for Wood Stains

Wood is one of the world’s oldest and most versatile building materials. As the evolution of applications grew, experimentation lead to the understanding that the durability of wood could be improved if it was coated to seal the fibers, creating a harder surface. Many of these protective coatings eventually moved from purely functional to also providing decorative enhancement.

Raw Umbers

Umbers are naturally occurring Iron Oxides that are highly valued for their transparency and neutral chromaticity. In their natural “crude or raw” form, their chemistry is similar to Yellow Iron Oxide. Like Yellow Iron Oxides, Raw Umbers have limited heat stability at temperatures greater than 175ºC/350ºF. At higher temperatures, Umbers convert to a Red Iron Oxide, Fe2O3 chemical form just like a Yellow Iron Oxide. This heating conversion is normally referred to as burning, hence the term Burnt Umber.

Syn-Ox® Reds

Synthetic Iron Oxides are opaque and offer better hiding than their natural counterparts. Hoover Color’s SYN-OX® Reds are synthetic Red Iron Oxides which range in undertones from yellowish-salmon to bluish-maroon. As with all Iron Oxide Pigments, SYN-OX® Reds are permanent and light fast. They possess excellent heat stability and chemical resistance. Hoover Color offers a variety of fifteen standard SYN-OX® Red Iron Oxides.
